There are only a few licensed veterinarians working in various Local Government Units (LGUs) and private companies in Ilocos Norte. These registered veterinarians look after the healthcare and welfare aspects of the considerable volume of companion and farm animals and the safety of animal products and by-products. Likewise, there are only a number of veterinary clinics in the area that cater to the needs of companion animals.
The MMSU is therefore taking a proactive step in line with these objectives by offering the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program. This would help augment the demand for more veterinary medicine doctors and practitioners. Moving forward, the DVM will extend its expertise and services to communities, government entities and other sectors of society as it explores prospects of partnership.
The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) that offers the sole program, the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine program was established in July 18, 2022. MMSU is the first academic institution to offer said program in Ilocos Norte. This furthers the University’s commitment, not only in providing quality education, but in responding to the imperatives of attaining “a heathy and resilient Philippines” and ultimately the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The CVM intends to strive for excellence in veterinary science in the region. It will focus on the programs and priorities of the university and the region that deal with the development and betterment in the field of veterinary medicine through research, extension, and production. Further, it will expand partnerships in both local and international institutions. Finally, the college will secure the interrelationship of animal health, public health, and the environment in safeguarding food safety and security. Despite its yet limited facilities and resources, the CVM is dedicated in attaining its full potentials and contribution to the government and society in general.
